So, the end of November is drawing near and December will no doubt bring countless ‘The Best Of’, ‘The Very Best Of’ and ‘Essential’ compilation albums that capture only a selection of the artists work. Normally it’s the stuff that the average fan can’t bear … ‘The Greatest Hits’: the breakthrough single and a bunch of top 60 ‘chart toppers’.
I have never been a fan of such albums. All of the tracks (bar one or two ‘previously unreleased’) are on the studio albums and if you like the artist enough then you’ll own these anyway. However, there are exceptions …
1. Unbreakable: The Afghan Whigs compilation released last year. There’s a few notable exclusions, but it’s nicely packaged, plays like a set from a Whigs gig and it’s great to hear the two new tracks from one of the greatest bands ever.
2. Thank You: The bonus DVD edition is worth purchasing. There’s the ‘previously unreleased’ gem, ‘All In The Suit That You Wear’, alongside some of the Stone Temple Pilots‘ best moments. Again there are notable exceptions, but the bonus DVD is the icing on the cake … 3 hours of videos, live stuff and amateur bootleg footage.
3. Selections Circa 1990-2000: The Giant Sand compilation is a nice starting point for anyone interested in the dusty sounds of Howe Gelb collective.
4. Ocean of Confusion: is the second, and finest, Screaming Trees retrospective from Epic/Sony (the first being the shabbily packaged Nearly Lost You). Covering the best of the Trees’ output between 1990 and 1996, this is another fine starting point.
… there are probably more, but I don’t own too many. If I remember any others I’ll give them a mention.
December also brings a ton of year end lists and I wonder how many of these that Axl Rose’s Chinese Democracy will appear in. Billed as “the most eagerly anticipated album ever”, 17 years and 4,800 musicians later, The Chinese Democracy was eventually released yesterday (November 24th). Some of the songs do sound like they were conceived 17 years ago and in that time rock music has evolved and many of Guns N’ Roses’ fans have likely passed on. All credit to Mr. Rose though, he’s stuck by the project and the sound that he heard.
I did expect the album to be terrible (mainly due to the farcical wait, the high drama and the fact it would never live up to the hype) I have to admit that it’s not. I’ve laughed at some of the insanity, the clichéd lyrics and the over the top howls. I’ve also found a few toe tapping moments there too, but ultimately it’s way too long (clocking in at over 70 minutes), lacks cohesion and is a little bloated (I expect the fact that there’s been so many ‘cooks’ involved hasn’t brought focus).
As I’ve said, I don’t think it’s terrible, but I don’t think it’s particularly good … in fact, I’m actually quite baffled by much of the album.
Where to now? Well, Velvet Revolver are still looking for a singer. But, according to ‘The Management’, this is an exciting time for Guns N’ Roses.
There’s also great news for fans of The Gutter Twins (well, those in Europe anyway): after what has been a very successful year for Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan, they return to Europe early in the New Year. We should expect a more stripped back set similar to Greg Dulli’s incredible Triple Door set (which was released via iTunes last month). The dates and venues:
January
15 UK Glasgow Oran Mor
16 IRELAND Dublin Academy
17 IRELAND Galway Roisin Dubh
19 UK London Union Chapel
20 BELGIUM Hasselt Muziekodroom
21 BELGIUM Brussels Ancienne Belgique

Anyway, I’ll be making a start on the Adventures In Stereo Best of 2008 list fairly shortly and for the people who bother visiting the blog and who emailed to say “hey! What’s going on here?”, I’ll be making an effort to post more often in 2009 (well, at least once a month). I’m also aware that I haven’t posted a bootleg in a while (in fact, Blind Melon was the last one) so I’ll get round to changing that real soon. My apologies.

Just a few things that you folk might be interested in:
1. Jane’s Addiction will unite for an NME Awards show, where they will receive the Godlike Genius Award
The original line up will perform for the first time since September 1991 at the ceremony on Wednesday, April 23rd at the Goldenvoice El Rey Theatre in L.A.
Hopefully the band rediscover the magic that brought them together and embark on a tour … maybe even record some new material. With Perry Farrell’s Satellite Party seemingly stalled who could say?
2. Sunday at Devil Dirt, the second album from Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan, is due out May 5th. You can expect more of the same, however the chemistry is slightly different this time around (due to the both being in the same room this time), making the whole thing sound that little better. And if what I’ve heard is anything to go by, this album is a lot darker than it’s predecessor.
Although Ballad of the Broken Seas was well received by critics, Lanegan fans were largely divided. I actually enjoyed the album, but felt that ‘Revolver’ (Lanegan’s writing contribution) was the highlight.
Sunday at Devil Dirt is again penned by Campbell and those who fell in love with the first album will no doubt fall in love all over again … those looking for something a little bit more will not be disappointed either.
3. Scott Ford has confirmed that The Gutter Twins will be appearing on Jools Holland’s ‘Later … ‘ on April 29th. This is great news as it harks back to the days when I actually enjoyed watching Later as it had bands that were great, not just ‘cool’.
It seems that The Gutter Twins have been well received and this just strengthens that further. Sadly it means that some tour dates will have to be cancelled, but this exposure is certainly good news.
4. Stone Temple Pilots announced an extensive tour, which is scheduled to kick off on May 17th. At the press conference at Harry Houdini’s Estate in Hollywood, the band also performed a 30 minute set.
This comes shortly after Weiland’s split from Velvet Revolver and almost certainly will result in a new album.
That’s about it.
Until next time, here’s two great MP3’s:
The Gutter Twins: Idle Hands (the Letterman performance) and Down the Line.
… and two great video’s to watch.

On February 22nd 1994, Greg Dulli, Steve Earle, John Curley, Rick McCollum and Douglas Falsetti took a bunch of instruments to BBC’s Media Vale studios and bashed out a few tunes.
They were amazing (as always). Luckily the songs they performed were recorded by the BBC for a broadcast on a John Peel show in March that year.
And here they are.
The Afghan Whigs and Stone Temple Pilots on the same day? Woah! Enjoy.

One of my favourite bands ever were The Afghan Whigs. Often labelled ‘Grunge’, The Afghan Whigs were more soul-influenced than their peers. In fact, Rolling Stone once stated that The Whigs had spent “the bulk of their career on the brink of stardom … never quite broke beyond a substantial legion of devotees enamored of their thinly veiled sleaze”. Sweet, right?
Twilight Singer and Gutter Twin Greg Dulli (vocals, rhythm guitar) formed the band in Cincinati back in 1986 with Rick McCollum (now fronting Moon Maan), John Curley (now of Staggering Statistics) and Steve Earle (now fronting Earle Grey).
In 1988, they released their debut album “Big Top Halloween” on their own Ultrasuede label. The album gathered a lot of attention and the band soon signed to Seattle’s “Sub Pop” label in 1989 (this caused a bit of a stir as The Whigs would be the first non-Northwestern U.S. band to record for the label).
In 1990, their first Sub Pop release “Up in It” was released; the blistering pace and yowling, effects-heavy guitars on tracks like “White Trash Party” gave no hint of the stylistic about-face to come. It was followed by a limited edition single released by No.6 Records under the name ‘The Ornament’.
Their signature, soul-drenched, sound was adopted in 1992 with the album Congregation and the limited EP, “Uptown Avondale” (which would be the last for Sub Pop).
The Afghan Whigs signed to Elektra Records and released their breakthrough record ‘Gentlemen’ in 1993. The album spawned the singles ‘Debonair’ and ‘Gentlemen’.
Despite personnel problems interfering with recording and touring, 1996 saw the band release the noir-influenced Black Love (drummer Steve Earle had departed, replaced by Paul Buchignani). Although the main subject matter in previous releases were liquor-drenched obsession, secrets and misery, Black Love was a step into a more dark, even seedier and complex side of Dulli’s persona. The band also featured in Ted Demme’s film ‘Beautiful Girls’, as well as contributing two songs to the soundtrack (Frederick Knight’s “Be For Real” and Barry White’s “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe”).
In 1998, The Afghan Whigs released their 6th album, 1965, on Columbia Records (Michael Horrigan, former Love Cowboys bassist replaced Buchignani). The album saw the band on inspired form. Sadly, it was the band’s last (however, last years ‘Unbreakable’ retrospective saw the 1965 line up re-unite to record two new tracks).
Here’s a couple of great tracks recorded by The Afghan Whigs for the BBC on August 4th 1993.
1. Rot (04:37)
2. Fountain & Fairfax (04:39)
3. I Keep Coming Back (04:29)
4. Tonight (04:32)
