Adventures In Stereo

Finally, Chinese Democracy and other stuff …

Chinese Democracy

So, the end of November is drawing near and December will no doubt bring countless ‘The Best Of’, ‘The Very Best Of’ and ‘Essential’ compilation albums that capture only a selection of the artists work.  Normally it’s the stuff that the average fan can’t bear … ‘The Greatest Hits’: the breakthrough single and a bunch of top 60 ‘chart toppers’.

I have never been a fan of such albums.  All of the tracks (bar one or two ‘previously unreleased’) are on the studio albums and if you like the artist enough then you’ll own these anyway.  However, there are exceptions …

1. Unbreakable: The Afghan Whigs compilation released last year. There’s a few notable exclusions, but it’s nicely packaged, plays like a set from a Whigs gig and it’s great to hear the two new tracks from one of the greatest bands ever.

2. Thank You: The bonus DVD edition is worth purchasing. There’s the ‘previously unreleased’ gem, ‘All In The Suit That You Wear’, alongside some of the Stone Temple Pilots‘ best moments.  Again there are notable exceptions, but the bonus DVD is the icing on the cake … 3 hours of videos, live stuff and amateur bootleg footage.

3. Selections Circa 1990-2000: The Giant Sand compilation is a nice starting point for anyone interested in the dusty sounds of Howe Gelb collective.

4. Ocean of Confusion: is the second, and finest, Screaming Trees retrospective from Epic/Sony (the first being the shabbily packaged Nearly Lost You).  Covering the best of the Trees’ output between 1990 and 1996, this is another fine starting point.

… there are probably more, but I don’t own too many.  If I remember any others I’ll give them a mention.

December also brings a ton of year end lists and I wonder how many of these that Axl Rose’s Chinese Democracy will appear in.  Billed as “the most eagerly anticipated album ever”, 17 years and 4,800 musicians later, The Chinese Democracy was eventually released yesterday (November 24th).  Some of the songs do sound like they were conceived 17 years ago and in that time rock music has evolved and many of Guns N’ Roses’ fans have likely passed on.  All credit to Mr. Rose though, he’s stuck by the project and the sound that he heard.

I did expect the album to be terrible (mainly due to the farcical wait, the high drama and the fact it would never live up to the hype) I have to admit that it’s not.  I’ve laughed at some of the insanity, the clichéd lyrics and the over the top howls.  I’ve also found a few toe tapping moments there too, but ultimately it’s way too long (clocking in at over 70 minutes), lacks cohesion and is a little bloated (I expect the fact that there’s been so many ‘cooks’ involved hasn’t brought focus).

As I’ve said, I don’t think it’s terrible, but I don’t think it’s particularly good … in fact, I’m actually quite baffled by much of the album.

Where to now? Well, Velvet Revolver are still looking for a singer.  But, according to ‘The Management’, this is an exciting time for Guns N’ Roses.

There’s also great news for fans of The Gutter Twins (well, those in Europe anyway): after what has been a very successful year for Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan, they return to Europe early in the New Year. We should expect a more stripped back set similar to Greg Dulli’s incredible Triple Door set (which was released via iTunes last month).  The dates and venues:

Anyway, I’ll be making a start on the Adventures In Stereo Best of 2008 list fairly shortly and for the people who bother visiting the blog and who emailed to say “hey! What’s going on here?”, I’ll be making an effort to post more often in 2009 (well, at least once a month).  I’m also aware that I haven’t posted a bootleg in a while (in fact, Blind Melon was the last one) so I’ll get round to changing that real soon.  My apologies.

New releases from Dulli, Weiland and … Goss?

So, with rumours still doing the rounds over a possible Stone Temple Pilots album in 2009, there’s the announcement of the imminent release of Scott Weiland’s second solo record.

Happy in Galoshes has been anticipated for quite a while.  And since a Rolling Stone article in 2002 I guess we all kinda thought the album would be with us real soon.

The wait is over though.  The album will be released on November 25th 2008, however those folks over at Amazon.com have a little surprise for us all.

For more information check out Scott Weiland’s Official Site

The track listing for the album is (according to Amazon):

1. Missing Cleveland
2. Tangle With Your Mind
3. Blind Confusion
4. Paralysis
5. She Sold Her System
6. Fame
7. Killing Me Sweetly
8. Big Black Monster
9. Crash
10. Beautiful Day
11. Pictures & Computers (I’m not Superman)
12. Arch Angel
13. Be Not Afraid

As well as this, Weiland’s Biography, Desperation #5, is also scheduled for an early 2010 release.

This isn’t the only release that has me singing the paises of the music gods.

What!?
Yeah!  I know!

In October 2007 Greg Dulli (The Afghan Whigs / Twilight Singers/ The Gutter Twins) played two nights at the Triple Door in Seattle.

As a founding member of The Greg Dulli Appreaciation Society (G Division) and hearing the tracks posted on MySpace, I have been itching to hear the rest of the recordings.

To be honest, I was fearing the worst (along with other Dulli fans) but a release – albeit through iTunes – has been announced for October 28th 2008.

Dulli assembled a cast of musicians including Petra Haden, Shawn Smith (Pigeonhed, Satchel, Brad), Jeff Klein and Barb Antonio to reinterpret - acoustically – some of his finest material.

The highlights from both nights will be included on the digital release:

1. The Killer

2. Candy Cane Crawl
3. Black Is The Color Of My True Love’s Hair
4. Tell Everyone
5. That’s Just How That Bird Sings
6. Isn’t It A Pity/Atlantis
7. King Only
8. Bonnie Brae
9. Tonight
10. Down The Line
11. Front Street

… and I’ll also await the release of Pine / Cross Dover from Masters of Reality.  Originally pencilled for an August (and then October) 2008 release, mastersofreality.co.uk has it credited as 2009.  Still, it promises to be a crackin album.

Has it been THAT long!?

Greetings …

… It’s been near enough 4 months since I last posted and there’s been so much that I’ve failed to comment on.

So what’s been going on?  I’m assuming that everyone who is interested will know that The Gutter Twins have issued a 7″ of God’s Children, which includes a great (new) track, titled Spanish Doors (which happens to be a door without a handle).  They also released Adorata (a ‘digital release’ of outtakes and the likes) through iTunes.

Speaking of iTunes, I aint a big fan ‘digital music outlets’.  I have never been inclined to buy MP3’s and although much of the music I buy ends up on the MP3 player, I like the ‘hard copy’.  The whole package (whether it be CD or record) is a necessity and I hope that Adorata eventually makes it on to such a format.

I figure that it’d be a good time to look over the year so far and also look at what’s ahead.

The Gutter Twins, Saturnalia
The finest album this year?  So far anyhoo.  It’s powerful and is exactly what we were all looking for from Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli.  We haven’t been disappointed.

Earth, The Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull
Another brilliant release from Dylan Carlson’s Earth.  Similar to HEX in its gothic soundscape and a title that refers to the story of Samson, this is one of the finest albums to have been released this year.

Shawn Smith, The Diamond Hand
Another great release from Shawn Smith (Pigeonhed, Brad, Satchel, Twilight Singers).  This has been a mainstay of my stereo since I purchased it.  It’s also worth noting that his previous albums have been re-issued.  Nice one.

Brian Wilson, That Lucky Old Sun
The demos floating around the information superhighway gave us all a taste of what was to come and there’s no denying that Mr. Wilson is back on form (the star studded ’Gettin’ In Over My Head’ was a little hit and miss, while the Christmas album wasn’t so inspiring either).

Other albums worth mentioning:
Nas, N; Calexico, Carried to Dust; Giant Sand, ProVISIONS; Kings of Leon, Only By The Night; Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!; Lil Wayne, Tha Carter III; MGMT, Oracular Spectacular and Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan, Sunday at Devil Dirt.

Stone Temple Pilots:
together and touring, Scott Weiland, the De Leo’s and Eric Kretz look as though they are back for good. It’s been too long.

Jane’s Addiction:
a stunning performance at the NME awards in L.A. reminded everyone just how incredible this band were prior to Strays.  Sadly it looks like it was just a one off … but with Perry Farrell’s Satellite Party falling apart at the seams and Dave Navarro’s The Panic Channell being the most musically redundant project he or Mr. Perkins have been involved in, maybe there’s hope that they’ll decide to get back in the studio.

What’s on the horizon?

According to Onewhiskey.com (the Mark Lanegan fansite) and various music publications, Mark Lanegan will be appearing at all dates … except Glasgow.  Which is a bummer, but you can be sure I’ll check this out a little more.

Masters of Reality: Bad News!

Ok, so being excited over the release of the as yet untitled album on May 12th and their pending visit to Glasgow in June, overcooked spaghetti is the only phrase I could use to describe myself when I discovered that their album and tour has been postponed.

However!  According to Mascot Recordsit aint all bad:

Chris Goss has announced the postponement of the new Masters Of Reality release as well as the summer tour, due to the fact that he is still in the studio recording what he considers the best Masters of Reality record ever.

As Chris Goss quotes:
“I sincerely regret if the tours’ delay is causing any inconvenience and disappointment. I can only say that I have not stopped and cannot stop writing new music for the album. I believe it is our best work to date. We will bring this on large and correctly; both in album form and in the live arena. The summer will bring the album. The autumn will bring a Masters of Reality tour of a quality I’ve waited my whole life to present to you.”

… donno about you folks, but the blow is more than softened with the prospect of a masterpiece.

In the meantime, enjoy this fantastic performance:

Hello again!

Just a few things that you folk might be interested in:

1. Jane’s Addiction will unite for an NME Awards show, where they will receive the Godlike Genius Award

“so…short story is that ive decided to do a few songs with janes addiction at the nme awards show. they are honoring the legacy of janes and therefore i have decided to participate”.

The original line up will perform for the first time since September 1991 at the ceremony on Wednesday, April 23rd at the Goldenvoice El Rey Theatre in L.A.

Hopefully the band rediscover the magic that brought them together and embark on a tour … maybe even record some new material.  With Perry Farrell’s Satellite Party seemingly stalled who could say?

2. Sunday at Devil Dirt, the second album from Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan, is due out May 5th.  You can expect more of the same, however the chemistry is slightly different this time around (due to the both being in the same room this time), making the whole thing sound that little better.  And if what I’ve heard is anything to go by, this album is a lot darker than it’s predecessor.

Although Ballad of the Broken Seas was well received by critics, Lanegan fans were largely divided.  I actually enjoyed the album, but felt that ‘Revolver’ (Lanegan’s writing contribution) was the highlight.

Sunday at Devil Dirt is again penned by Campbell and those who fell in love with the first album will no doubt fall in love all over again … those looking for something a little bit more will not be disappointed either.

3. Scott Ford has confirmed that The Gutter Twins will be appearing on Jools Holland’s ‘Later … ‘ on April 29th.  This is great news as it harks back to the days when I actually enjoyed watching Later as it had bands that were great, not just ‘cool’.

It seems that The Gutter Twins have been well received and this just strengthens that further.  Sadly it means that some tour dates will have to be cancelled, but this exposure is certainly good news.

4. Stone Temple Pilots announced an extensive tour, which is scheduled to kick off on May 17th.  At the press conference at Harry Houdini’s Estate in Hollywood, the band also performed a 30 minute set.

This comes shortly after Weiland’s split from Velvet Revolver and almost certainly will result in a new album.

That’s about it.

Until next time, here’s two great MP3’s:

The Gutter Twins: Idle Hands (the Letterman performance) and Down the Line.

… and two great video’s to watch.

Masters of Reality return!

For those of you unaware of Chris Goss or Masters of Reality, check out this incredible show from Roadburn Festival 2001 that I’d found floating around the net.  I’ve been a fan of this band since 1998, when I found ‘How High The Moon’ in one of these record fayre events for £7.00.  I had been looking for the rare debut album, but I figured anything would do.

‘How High The Moon’ is one of the finest live albums I have ever heard and remains a favourite.  I duly purchased the entire back catalogue (including the Def American, Rick Rubin produced debut) and caught the band on tour in 2001.

You may also be interested to learn (if you aren’t aware of Mr Goss) that Chris Goss was also a major player in the founding of Queens of the Stone Age (having ‘discovered’ Kyuss and having helped name the QotSA) and the Desert Sessions, as well as being a collaborator of Josh Homme, Mark Lanegan … well an extensive list of alternative artists who he’s produced records for or appeared on records with.  He has even written a track for an episode of ‘Ren & Stimpy’.

Anyhoo, having been busying himself with Queens of the Stone Age’s excellent ‘Era Vulgaris’, gigs with Josh Homme as 5:15er’s and a brilliant full length debut with Goon Moon, Mascot Records have announced that the new Masters of Reality record is due out May 12th.

There’s also some tour dates announced:

May

31st: Bad Bonn Kilbi – Düdingen [Switzerland]

June

6th: Rock-Im-Park – Nürnberg Zeppelinfeld [Germany]
8th: Rock-Am-Ring – Nurburgring [Germany]
12th: Hultsfred Festival – Hultsfred [Sweden]
16th: The Cathouse – Glasgow [UK]

… oh, and the picture?  That was from the last night at the Rancho de Luna.

Goss explains: “the idea was to get a photo of us roasting marshmallows on the burning guitar.  It was a 12 string.  I tuned the strings pretty high hoping the tense strings would pop and make good noises.  We set up a microphone and recorded, but nothing happened.  Our spirits shrivelled.

Then John and I thought the wood might explode, splashing molten varnish on us, or perhaps the fumes from the plastic pick guard would kill us.  So we ran.  We forgot to buy marshmallows too.”

– thanks to MastersofReality.co.uk for this (a great fricken’ site).

The Gutter Twins: Saturnalia

As most of us now now, Mark Lanegan, Greg Dulli and their friends are on the road.  Their debut album as ‘The Gutter Twins’ is still a few weeks away, however, you can listen to it here.

I had been trying to avoid listening to the album until the postman delivers my pre-ordered copy on the day of release, however the urge to hear more of the songs (4 tracks are available to listen to on their MySpace) kinda got the better of me.  I’ve been listening to it pretty much non-stop since.

For those who don’t know, here’s the tracklisting:

The Stations
God’s Children
All Misery/Flowers
The Body
Idle Hands
Circle the Fringes
Who Will Lead Us?
Seven Stories Underground
I Was in Love with You
Bête Noire
Each to Each
Front Street

‘Who Will Lead Us?’ destroyed me.  As too did ‘Seven Stories Underground’.  I’ll post a review soon enough, but it’s fair to say that it’s been worth the wait.  Likely to be one of the albums of 2008.

Happy New Year!!

… to all.  The last few weeks have been fairly busy, but this afternoon I thought to myself that it was about time that I drafted something up for those who visit this site.

2008 promises to be a good year for music, but here are the 10 albums that are bound to set the tone for the rest of the year.

 1. “Saturnalia”, The Gutter Twins

The Gutter TwinsThe long awaited collaboration between (ex-Screaming Trees frontman and Queens of the Stone Age collaborator) Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli (Twilight Singers/The Afghan Whigs) has finally been recorded and a release date has been set.

The album from the pair has been rumored since 2003, and they performed as The Gutter Twins for the first time back in September 2005.

Until the album is released on March 4th, you can listen to “Idle Hands” and “The Stations” on their MySpace page.  ”Idle Hands” is also available to download for a limited time.

2. “The Golden Age”, American Music Club

American Music Club return to The Golden AgeThe first record since the band’s welcome 2004 return ‘Love Songs for Patriots’ is released on February 4th.  This, their 9th album, has already been described by Uncut Magazine as their best since 1993’s ‘Mercury’ – which was one of the finest records released in the 90’s.

The line up change (bassist Danny Pearson and drummer Tim Mooney are replaced by guitarist Sean Hoffman and drummer Steve Didelot) shouldn’t impact the group too muh, as American Music Club was always about the union of Mark Eitzel and Vudi.

 3. “Dig!!!, Lazerus, Dig!!!”, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

Dig Lazerus Dig

March also sees the release of the first Bad Seeds record since Cave’s ‘Grinderman’ project (March 3rd).

Cave has stated that the album will have the ‘Grinderman’ sound, suggesting that “Dig!!!…” will be a rock orientated set.  Whether or not the album will also have the orchestral arrangements of recent releases is unknown, but we can be sure that this will be one heck of a record.

Nick Cave, throught the bands official website, had this to say about the records inspiration:

“Ever since I can remember hearing the Lazarus story, when I was a kid, you know, back in church, I was disturbed and worried by it. Traumatized, actually. We are all, of course, in awe of the greatest of Christ’s miracles – raising a man from the dead – but I couldn’t help but wonder how Lazarus felt about it. As a child it gave me the creeps, to be honest. I’ve taken Lazarus and stuck him in New York City, in order to give the song, a hip, contemporary feel. I was also thinking about Harry Houdini who spent a lot of his life trying to debunk the spiritualists who were cashing in on the bereaved. He believed there was nothing going on beyond the grave. He was the second greatest escapologist, Harry was, Lazarus, of course, being the greatest. I wanted to create a kind of vehicle, a medium, for Houdini to speak to us if he so desires, you know, from beyond the grave”.

 Sweet.

4. “Diamond Hoo Ha”, Supergrass

Diamond Hoo Ha‘Road to Rouen’ was seen by many as an elegant swan song from one of Britain’s finest rock bands.  However, the band had recently debuted some new material at Guilfest before announcing Diamond Hoo Ha’s release for March 24th.

The first track, Diamond Hoo Ha Man has found some airplay on BBC6 Music and if it’s anything to go by, the record should be a real treat.

 5. “April”, Sun Kil Moon

Sun Kil Moon Announced through the bands official website in November 2007, the third studio album from Mark Kozelek’s Sun Kil Moon is set to be released on April 1st 2008.

This follows the brilliant ‘Ghosts of the Great Highway’ and ‘Tiny Cities’, which, oddly, was a collection of Modest Mouse covers.  If ‘Tiny Cities’ was considered by many to be a little disappointing, ‘April’ is set to impress if ‘Moorestown’ is anything to go by.

6. “Detox”, Dr. Dre

Dr. Dre orders Detox2008 should see the release of Dr. Dre’s third album.  The excellent ‘2001′ was Dre’s last ’solo’ album and ‘Detox’ was first mentioned back in 2000, while the imminent release of ’Detox’ has been rumoured since 2004.

Recently, the most promising signs of the albums iminent release were Dre’s statement in February to Power 106 radio that he’d finished 18 tracks and was looking for 13 for the finished article, 50 Cent’s comments to HipHopDX.com in August 2007 that “He’s working on it. I’ve recorded two songs for him. He’s such a perfectionist. But sometimes that can be a bad thing. You create new pressure when you wait that long. When you put a new album against the last two classics, people will scrutinize it if they become impatient”, and Dre’s comments at the MTV Music Award in September regarding Detox coming soon.

Fingers crossed.

7. “Untitled”, Alice in Chains

Alice in Chains back??Ok … if I’m completely honest I’ve not decided whether this is a good thing or not.  Details are a bit patchy, however it is rumoured that the 3 original members and William DuVall have been recording new material.

In April 2007, one of AiC’s road crew (The Baldy?) had announced:

“I’ve been [in Los Angeles] for five days, sat through three rehearsals and one demo recording session, listened to several other demos, and I can happily report that the new stuff is kicking my ass right out of my pants. Remember that these songs are still only in the early stages of being written too. Just in the time I’ve been here, the guys have taken a riff and worked on it and expanded it and added layers to it, and now it’s practically a full-fledged song”.

8. “Before I Self Destruct”, 50 Cent

The end for 50 Cent?Recorded around the same time as his 2007 release ’Curtis’, ‘Before …’ was initially scheduled to be the first of the two releases.  However, as things turned out, ‘Curtis’ was issued first (in September) and ‘Before I Self Destruct’ took a back seat.

In April 30th 2007, 50 Cent told DJ Semtex (?) that “Some people think I changed the title of my album from “Before I Self Destruct” to “Curtis”, but what I did was, I changed albums. I had Before I Self Destruct, I recorded twelve songs under that actual topic, and then I created the material that is under Curtis, and I felt like this album should come out right now and Before I Self Destruct is gonna be my follow-up record, so I’m probably like three or four records away from completing my next album at this point. And I signed a five-album deal with Interscope, so this Curtis is my third album, Before I Self Destruct is scheduled to release February 4th, which will be the anniversary of Get Rich or Die Tryin’ and my final studio recording album because the fifth album in my recording contract is a greatest hits album, so technically, I’m about three songs away from completing my music career”.

Rumours had circulated about the possible involvement of a certain Mr. West and MTV decided to ask … surprisingly enough, Fiddy told them in November that Kanye West had produced a track but it had not made the final cut.

He also stated that “this album is more aggressive and darker- I’ll produce something that hands down will be the best record of that time period”

And when asked about double standards with swearing on records Fiddy said: “Matter a fact my next single starts ’It’s Britney Bitch’”.

Due to the fact that ‘Curtis’ was delayed it’s expected that ‘Before I Self Destruct’ will also be put on hold for a few months.

 9. “American Recordings VI”, Johnny Cash

American VI?Another project where the details aren’t exactly clear.  However, it has been widely reported that on the day Johnny Cash and Rick Rubin put the finishing touches to 2002’s American IV: The Man Comes Around, recording continued.  Roumor has it that they wrapped up around 60 tracks a week before the Man in Black passed on September 12th 2003.

American V was duly released in July 2006 and since then there has been reports that Rick Rubin and Cash Jnr. have been assembling American VI.

“I avoided it for a long time, because I didn’t want to feel sad and I was concerned from a technical standpoint, because a lot of it was recorded when he wasn’t in the best shape,” says Rubin.  ”I was shocked at the volume and quality of the material. Certain songs raised their hands and volunteered for this album. VI is mostly revealed but not completely.”

Whether American VI will be released in 2008 is still uncertain, but here’s hoping something wonderful is waiting to be heard.

10. “The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull”, Earth

step closer to conventional rock??The 6th album from the god of guitar doom, Dylan Carlson.  According to sources, the album is a step in the direction of conventional rock.
